Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
