Government Official Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in all cars.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Background

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

The wider security environment highlights the importance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to communication practices.
