Police stated they were contacted by a resident who found a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then located numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.

City officials stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.

An important representative stated the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
